Glossary

Terms used throughout the book. Code names are given where they differ from the plain term.

Model

TermMeaning
ProjectThe whole document and single source of truth: media pool, timelines, folders, id counters. Saved as .vvproj (RON).
TimelineA sequence with its own fps, resolution, tracks, markers and master channel strip.
TrackVideo or audio lane of a timeline; clips sorted by start, never overlapping. Video tracks composite bottom to top.
ClipA span on a track. Its ClipSource is a media item, a solid colour, a text (title) or an adjustment clip.
Adjustment clipA clip with no content whose effects apply to the composite of the tracks below.
Media item (MediaItem)An imported file with its probed metadata and content hash.
Media poolAll media items of a project, organised in folders (MediaFolder).
Compound clipA media item whose content is another timeline of the project instead of a file.
Link groupClips (typically video + audio of one file) that move, trim and select together.
MarkerA note pinned to the timeline ruler, on one frame or over a range.
Keyframed<T>A parameter value that is either static or a list of keyframes with interpolation.
Effect stackPer-clip effects: transform, gain, colour, title, filters, masks, edge transitions.
Grade (GradeTracks)The params of a color correction filter: four wheels, saturations and range edges.
Processing precisionPer-project format of the compositor's work textures: 16-bit float (High) or 8 bits (Standard).
Cross transitionA transition straddling the cut between two adjacent clips of a track.
Channel stripMixer settings of an audio track or of the master bus: gain, pan, effect chain.
FrameIdxA time position in frames (i64) at the timeline's fps.

Editing

TermMeaning
CommandAn invertible change to the project; the unit of undo/redo.
HistoryThe undo/redo stack of commands; tells a saved project from a modified one.
Composite commandSeveral commands applied and undone as one step.
Ripple deleteDelete that closes the gap on every track, keeping sync.
SlipSliding a clip's media under it without moving or resizing the clip.
RelinkPointing media items at files that moved; forced relink matches files by properties instead of name.

Runtime

TermMeaning
SessionAn open document in the UI-free core: project, history, save path and background jobs.
JobBackground work of a session (import, OTIO import, relink, export); its outcome comes back as a session event.
Frame cacheRAM cache of decoded frames under a global budget, evicted by distance from the playhead.
RenderAheadThe thread that decodes ahead of the playhead across the whole timeline and fills the frame cache.
Mix buffersAudio already decoded and resampled to the mixer's format, built on a dedicated thread.
ProxyAn all-intra, lighter copy of a media file used for smooth editing.
Content hashHash of a file's content: the key for proxies, waveforms and cached frames.
HW decodeDecoding on the GPU through an FFmpeg hwaccel (NVDEC, Vulkan video, VideoToolbox).
Work textureWhere the compositor composes, in the project's precision; resolved with dither to the 8-bit output.
ScopesWaveform, RGB parade, vectorscope and histogram of a frame, computed on the GPU.

External

TermMeaning
NLENon-linear editor.
OTIOOpenTimelineIO, the interchange format for timelines between NLEs.
MCPModel Context Protocol: lets AI agents call Venturi's tools.
VADVoice activity detection (Silero VAD), used for silence removal.
RONRusty Object Notation, the text format of project files.
